WHAT IS DECAFFEINATED COFFEE?

Real coffee lovers can drink a freshly brewed cup of coffee at any time of the day. But, if you want to limit your caffeine intake, you can consider drinking decaffeinated coffee. Please be aware, decaf is not the same as caffeine free. Decaf coffee does contain some caffeine, but at least 97% less than regular coffee beverages. In the EU, coffee is considered caffeine free if roasted coffee it contains less than 0.1% caffeine.

What is DECAF?

Decaf is an abbreviation of decaffeinated. The decaffeination of coffee is a process where nearly all the caffeine is removed from the beans, before they are being roasted. This process is believed to have been discovered by accident, when a German coffee merchant (named Ludwig Roselius) found his coffee bean shipment damaged by the salty sea water.

Try TASSIMO decaffeinated coffee pods and discover how tasteful decaf can be.

How much caffeine is in decaf coffee?

Coffee beans can be decaffeinated using different processes. The decaffeination takes place before the coffee is roasted. All processes will safely extract caffeine from the whole green coffee bean, while maintaining the natural coffee taste and aroma where possible.

How is coffee decaffeinated?

Decaf is an abbreviation of decaffeinated. The decaffeination of coffee is a process where nearly all the caffeine is removed from the beans, before they are being roasted. This process is believed to have been discovered by accident, when a German coffee merchant (named Ludwig Roselius) found his coffee bean shipment damaged by the salty sea water. A number of standard practices can involve:

  • Swelling the green coffee beans with water or steam to prepare them for caffeine extraction
  • Extracting the caffeine from the beans. This is oftentimes done with a solvent. This process can be repeated until very little caffeine is left.
  • Steaming the beans will remove residues of the solvent
  • Drying the decaffeinated beans, so they are ready for the next process: roasting.

All methods are completely safe and follow rigorous quality and safety standards, to offer you the best quality decaf coffee.
